For more than half a century, the brick building that was the St. Eugene Mission portrayed the darkest of times. But former Chief Sophie Pierre had a vision – a vision to take something completely negative, and turn it into a powerful engine of good, benefitting her people and her Nation.
This beautiful painting, depicting native elder Mary Paul, hangs inside the lobby of the St. Eugene Hotel. After years of discussions regarding the revitalization of the Mission Building into a hotel and resort, Ms. Paul’s words summed up why it was important to move forward with this project.
“Since it was within the St. Eugene Mission school that the culture of the Kootenay Indian was taken away, it should be within the building that it is returned.”
