The Original Barn

An Original Barn

St. Eugene Mission operated as a residential school from 1912 to 1970. Five thousand local First Nations children passed through the Mission’s doors to attend classes. The school was self-sustaining and the children were expected to work the fields, milk the cows, and contribute to all other aspects of running a dairy farm.

The Pro-Shop is located in the original barn and a little known fact is that besides animals, at one point it also housed an Olympic-sized swimming pool on the upper level. It’s no wonder the structure has sustained itself over the past 100 years.

Today, St. Eugene has been reclaimed by the Ktunaxa Nation and proudly turned into an economic and cultural engine.
