Sheep Herding Championships2011 Western Canadian/CBCA National Championships

We are excited to be a sponsor of the 2011 Western Canadian/Canadian Border Collie Association (CBCA) National Championships!  This event will be taking place at Pine Butte Ranch (located nearby in Wycliffe) from August 25th to 28th

Pine Butte Ranch is a working cattle ranch that, according to the Natural Conservancy of Canada, “is celebrated for the exemplary health and productivity of both its cattle and its grasslands”.  Less than 2 percent of British Columbia’s grasslands are protected and 1,300 acres (525 hectares) of those grasslands are on Pine Butte Ranch.  A number of species at risk have been confirmed at the ranch, including the American badger, the long-billed curlew, the Columbia sharp-tailed grouse, the Lewis’ woodpecker, and the short-eared owl.

The Western Canadian/CBCA National Championships is one of the largest events in Canadian stock dog competition.  A trial consists of the handler sending the dog out to drive the herd, and then to direct the sheep through panels and into the pen.  The herd for this competition will consist of 250 sheep from a large flock of Rambouillette and Rambouillette cross ewes from the Livingston Hutterite Colony in Lundbreck, AB.  Sixty to seventy dogs are expected to be competing and the competition will be judged by Faansie Basson, a well-respected trainer, clinician, judge, and stock person who resides in Swelledam, Western Cape, South Africa.

Spectators are welcome ($5/person or $10/vehicle), although they are asked to refrain from bringing their own dogs.
